The statistics give an overall view of Finnish agriculture by illustrating the structure of farms, ownership and production, as well as the number and age structure of farmers.

The statistics contain information on the number of farms, land use, average field areas, production sectors, and the number and age structure of farmers.

Categories

Data is available for the whole of Finland and also regionally by Employment and Economic Development Centre. Some of this publication’s data is also classified according to field size, the legal form of the farm, production sector, and the age of the farmer.

Data collection and sources

The Farm Register, which is an annual compilation of data on all the farms engaging in agricultural production in Finland, is used as a source for these statistics. Tike’s (Information Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry) Statistical Services Division collates statistics from different sources.

The majority of the Farm Register is based on official information gathered from farmers during their dealings with Finland’s agricultural industry administration. This data is supplemented using an annual questionnaire sent directly to farmers.

Update frequency

The statistics are drawn up annually.

Preparation and publication schedule

The statistics are published in May and an advance estimate is released in February.

Time series

Data is available from 1972 onwards. Comparable data has been collected as part of the Agricultural Census since the 1920s.
