Description
The annual statistics on regional meat production illustrate beef, pork and mutton production by area. The statistics are based on information contained in the Bovine Register and on data collected monthly from slaughterhouses. They contain data on meat production by municipality, Employment and Economic Development Centre, and EU support area. Data is also available by other regional classifications.
Data content
The statistics illustrate the slaughter volumes (number of carcasses and weight in kilograms) of cattle, swine and sheep at slaughterhouses. A slaughterhouse’s meat production volume includes slaughter animals that the slaughterhouse has produced itself, animals purchased from other producers, and producer returns. The statistics on beef production also contain separate regional data on bull, cow and heifer meat. The regional statistics on pork production contain data on the slaughter of fattening pigs, sows and boars, and the regional statistics on mutton production contain information on the slaughter of lambs and sheep.
The classification of farms into regions is based on the municipality in which a farm’s administrative centre is located.

Regional data on beef, pork and mutton production is available by, for example, municipality, Employment and Economic Development Centre, Rural Advisory Centre, province, and EU support area.
Data collection and sources
The regional pork and mutton production statistics are based on data provided by slaughterhouses on the number of slaughter animals acquired from producers. Meat procurement data for each municipality is collected from slaughterhouses on a monthly basis. The majority of businesses in the slaughter industry fall within the scope of Tike’s data collection. Those that fall outside are mainly businesses that carry out small-scale on-farm slaughter.
The regional statistics on beef production are obtained from the Bovine Register, which is part of the Rural Business Register. All slaughterhouses must enter data on cattle slaughter into this register.
Update frequency
Statistics are drawn up annually.
Preparation and publication schedule
Data for the previous year is available at the end of March of the following year.
Time series
Regional data is available from the 1990s onwards.
