Description

The annual statistics on total milk production contain data on both on-farm milk usage and the volume of milk supplied to dairies. The statistics also provide information on the number of cows and the average yield per cow. The statistics are based on information contained in the Farm Survey and the Bovine Register and on data collected monthly from dairies.

Data content

The statistics contain data on both on-farm milk usage and the volume of milk supplied to dairies. On-farm milk usage is divided into three categories: milk used in food management, milk fed to livestock, and other uses. These other uses include direct sales and milk used to produce farm cheese and farm butter. There is also information on the number of cows at 1 May and 1 December, as well as time series data on total milk production and the average yield per cow. Milk volumes are presented in millions of litres, livestock numbers in thousands of cows, and average yield in litres per cow.

Data is available for the whole of Finland.

Data collection and sources

Data on the milk volumes received by dairies is collected monthly from dairies. All dairies that receive milk from suppliers fall within the scope of Tike’s data collection. The on-farm milk usage statistics are drawn up using a sample of the data collected from farmers for the Farm Survey, which is conducted in December. The number of dairy cows at 1 May and 1 December are taken from the Bovine Register.
